Castro City is a tiny neighborhood in Mountain View, CA situated between Central Expressway, California Street, College Avenue and Rengstorff Avenue. Besides these border streets, the only interior streets are Fair Oaks Street, Leland Avenue and University Avenue. Residents prize this small community for its ethnic diversity and proximity to downtown Palo Alto, Los Altos and of course downtown Mountain View. Homes in the community alternate between new two-stories and old cottage structures.
Rengstorff Park and Castro Park are the major parks in the area, with the former being located right across Rengstorff Avenue from the community. It’s complete with a baseball field, swimming pool, recreation area, sprawling green spaces and multiple intersecting paved walking paths. The Mountain View Senior Center is also right next door, proving convenient for residents of Castro City who are 55 and older; this all-purpose facility has entertainment, socialization and educational services and programs for seniors.
When it comes to shopping around this community, it does not get any more convenient than the San Antonio Shopping Center. This outdoor shopping mall is one of the largest in Mountain View, and it is anchored by Wal-Mart and 24-Hour Fitness. Other stores include Kohl’s, Payless, GameStop, Radio Shack, T-Mobile, Pearl Cafe, Trader Joe’s, JoAnn Fabrics and Chase Bank.
Three public schools serve Castro City: Los Altos High, Graham Middle and Monta Loma Elementary. Los Altos High School is a short drive south across West El Camino Real, while Graham Middle is similarly placed, except more to the east. Monta Loma Elementary, however, is located north and is by far the closest of the three schools, just across the Central Expressway off Thompson Avenue.
